Join Dion Chang and I tomorrow evening, 4 March at 6pm , at Exclusive Books at the Waterfront, Cape Town. We are launching the book "The State we're in - the 2010 Flux Trend Review" (Pan Macmillan 2009) Edited by Dion with chapters written by Dion, myself and illustrious thinkers such as Sarah Badat,Loren Phillips, Randall Abrahams and Bishop Paul Verryn.
I am looking forward to this event so come along and hear about new trends that the authors of the chapters predict for 2010. No surprises in my chapter- title is "From silence to violence- how do you define sexual identity in the 21st century". I loved thinking about this and writing it up - unfortunately my predictions are not happy ones. That's called wishful thinking as in numbers of people practicing safer sex will increase in this century. Just tonight on my radio show on Heart 104.9fm, some of my predicted trends were placed squarely in my ear:
Too many text messages about non use of condoms and what are my risks now; one caller sharing how his girlfriend disclosed her suspected HIV positive status to him only after he threatened to "beat her up" : 3 predictions just there: no condoms, increase in GBV (gender based violence) and HIV. Bring in the roses without the thorns...
I thank the 100 Club who invited me to be their guest speaker at the Mount Nelson yesterday. Initially , on asking, the organiser said not to bring sex toys to sell, only my books. At ISSWSH meeting in Florida there were two presentations out of the medical box: one was on "lubricants, moisturizers and vibrators: clinical uses" and the other was on educational sex DVD's. If sexual science sees value of these products for people's sexual health, I decided I could ethically bring sex toys to the Mount Nelson. I thank the many women who had the courage to come and see, feel and learn - and even buy their first sexual health product.
I learn so much when I engage with the public - they share their concerns, sexual activity and relationship behaviour. For example a woman of 70plus shared with me - and then with a group of women gathering - that she had been widowed 5 years and recently met a new man. When he dropped his pants, she claims never to have seen such a huge penis- he is 75. She is struggling with her non - estrogenised vagina, to get him inside . I was able to offer her suggestions on how to go about getting her vagina prepared so she can suck him in.
What was once again most evident was the lack of information, fear and ignorance around hormones. I ache as I hear how women suffer without hormones, their ambivalence about taking them ,s topping them; fuelled by the ambivalence of their health care providers. I plan to do my radio show on Radio 702/Cape Talk on Friday 5th on Hormone Update - be sure to listen in.
My jet lag wakes me at 3am, yet I am not feeling any exhaustion as I am so excited about the many new projects on the go in my world, which I shall share as they happen. Also I am kept awake talking to Australia, UK and USA trying real hard to get certain products in that I feel you need to have, that is your right to have. I cannot accept that we cannot get the most incredible range of KY jelly products here that the rest of the Western world is able to have- I will find a way- watch this space:)
Do you not simply love the new range of Lelo and Fun Factory toys in the shop?? My magician Mike, is trying real hard to get them beautifully displayed for you on the site so go check them out. Come say hi at the waterfront tomorrow night .. till then.
