It is quite amazing how leaving the safety, comfort, familiarity of home brings one needed, necessary essential respite. I live a privileged life, privileged in that I get to spend most of my time doing what brings me joy, satisfaction and gives me a great sense of purpose. Yet I need to be away from this enveloping beautiful life - to catch my breath, to gain perspective, think different thoughts as I am exposed to many different smells, sounds, sights and tastes that foreign cities offer.

There is something special about pure focus, utter self involvement for the purpose of achieving one's goals. Soccer goals fall into this category as well as tennis balls. It is quiet humbling to hear the ages of these superb soccer athletes. Many are really late age teenagers, as defined by theories on youth. One sees the capabilities of our youth through the skill, physical and mental ability of these young men. I guess one of the reasons I admire these youth is that they had to give up a lot of fun to get to be on the world stage. Youth is a time of experimenting - and too many of our South African youth fall between the cracks of experimentation and never get to perform at their peak.
