The designer vagina raises its ugly head again. I remain appalled and more fearful of this "new normal"
I fear that the more we are exposed to articles, blogs and adverts the more we become desensitized to the horror of this and begin to say to ourselves :"I want one of those."
I acknowledge there are clinical reasons for a certified plastic surgeon to do vaginaplasty. And an ethical clinician will do so after an intense holistic assessment and deem this the best treatment for a woman. As a clinician I am in favour of women enjoying sex, wanting sex and if for example, oversized labia cause pain, create inhibition, and interfere with the woman's quality of life, of course she may prove to be a good candidate for this kind of plastic surgery. (note I say 'plastic surgery" - this is not the domain of gynaecologists )
Who determines what are oversized labia? Who determines who is a good candidate? This is when things get a little tricky as at this moment there are no clinical trials, no standardized regulations to assist a clinician in making these decision. Hence the essential need to go to an accredited plastic surgeon who does not push vaginaplasty to every woman who does not enjoy sex.
Recently a 75 year old man consulted with me about his erectile failure. His solution to his problem: circumcision! This is not the age of sexual enlightenment. This is the age of sexual abstinence, fear and ignorance. Hence my fear of a woman putting her vulva in the hands of a person who has no enlightenment and is chasing bucks . Men have always bought sex - and I see vaginaplasty as another commodity they are "buying" from insecure women, to enrich themselves.
Know every adult magazine you view have women's genitals airbrushed to resemble Barbie and porn stars have vaginaplasty to earn a living.
What about sexual functioning? Not surprising , there is no research on the impact of vaginoplasty on sexual functioning. Many narratives from "satisfied" women post operative but no robust clinical data. Need I say more..
I take a stand against vaginoplasty - how about you?
