I wrote about it Nov 2009 when the new bill was brought to the Ugandan Parliament. if this bill is passed anyone considered to be LGBTI will be executed and friends and families jailed- seriously. GDX and the other LGBTI organisations throughout Africa, as well as the western international community, are doing sterling lobbying and advocacy work but the chance of this bill being passed remains a possibility. You have to imagine what it is like to be persecuted and criminalized due to your different sexual orientation and your gender variance - no wonder we all try stay "straight" and vanilla.. it is too dangerous to be other.
Going to see the movie "Precious" was like listening to an old record - the horror of childhood sexual, emotional and physical abuse. I understand the dynamics of it but my heart can never accept the generational destruction of lives including sexual lives. I really struggle to contain myself on hearing a man in my therapy room tell me how he "hits his woman". Yes acknowledgement is the first step to recovery but damn this is not right.
For the first time I got to see the direct impact of Jacob Zuma's choice of lifestyle play out in the private arena. A man had very recently disclosed to his wife of many, many years that he has been having an affair for a number of years. They were in my therapy room trying to find a creative solution to their dilemma. The dilemma for the man is that he would like to continue the outside relationship whilst livign with and stayign married ot his wife. His solution: polygamy. And he said if it works for JZ why could it not work for him. I wonder if JZ even stops to consider the direct impact of his behavioural choices on the man in the street he purports to serve in wisdom.
