Exhausting, energizing, stimulating giving to so many people and receiving in abundance both positive and negative feedback. What is intolerable to me is working with health care providers who do not do research, present incorrect information and in turn potentially harm patients. We are a funny bunch of humans, having a great deal of faith in"experts". Especially those in the medical profession so health care providers carry a huge responsibility. So imagine going to be educated by a fellow colleague who then presents to you biased and old, very old research data. Like hormones will give you breast cancer or something as sensationalist with no supporting evidence.
As a good health care provider you take this evidence as gospel (unless you have fulfilled your responsibility and keep reading updated research) and you or I walk in for a consult, a discussion on hormone replacement therapy. This good doctor, with the presenters slides fresh in his mind, scares the patient off hormones. The impact of this is horrendous.
To spoil myself from hours of intense labour I went to the Franschoek Literary Festival and got to meet/listen to some of my most admired South African authors . Anjie Krog is a legend, a brilliant intellectual author, poet and thinker. Outspoken in her beliefs, yet thoughtful in that process, I teared to be sitting at the feet of this South African heroine. Politics is reflected in every space in this country so why not at a literary festival. Here Anjie Krog bumped heads with Rian Malan, he of My Traitors Heart. And of course we were all swept into the heat of this exchange. Nothing like a good intellectual bun fight to get the blood racing and brain cells pumping new thoughts.
I also disappeared into meeting after meeting , negotiating what is to be my contribution to WC2010 - A Dr. Eve Play Party. A real party, party for women only. I have been obstructed at every level of activism, every attempt I have made over the last 6 months to bring sexual consciousness to WC2010. Together with my comrades - and I thank all the NGO's who without hesitation jumped on board with me - I threw in the towel. Thought ,Fuck It , let's have a party. And so it is..
In advance I thank the Pepper Club Boutique Hotel & Spa in Loop street for venue - amaaazing! It is quite exquisite and just being there will be a treat for the women of Cape Town. And that's as you walk in the door .. keep visiting the site for more information, menu, events at the Party - it is going to be un missable.
