I always feel my most proudly South African when I am in America. It is so paradoxical that the land of the free is less free constituionally than present day South Africa. I feel proud that we have moved on since the dark days of Apartheid. At least constitutionally. America feels conservative and way behind us. South Africa has need of an attitude change to catch up with our constitution. But at least we have the right to demand these changes.
Imagine being a LGBTI person anywhere else in Africa. You could well end up brutally murdered like David Kato. We have a way to go...
I am amused as I watch American television - they blazenly advertise drugs such as PDE5I (Viagra, Levitra, Cialis) that treat erectile dysfunction , no shyness around consumerism, but no abortions - I think this blatant advertising is more invasive thus harmful into people's lives than giving women the right to choose.. Aah seeing Sarah Pallin reminds me of the high tolerance levels for stupidity of the average American - she is simply unbelievable.. when I asked an American why they tolerate her, the reply was :"because she is pretty..." And we think America is made up of advanced intellectual thinkers..
Talking about intellectual thinkers, Playboy South Africa launches in April. I am uber excited about this and proud to have a column in it. Keep visiting the site for updates. And more...
