On a daily basis I am making statements to the press, both national and international, on sexual and reproductive rights in Africa. It is simply atrocious how much I have to report.
I see the look of surprise on the faces of medical students as well as the health care providers to whom I present academic papers, when I ask them about their sexual rights beliefs - and then proceed to teach about sexual medicine within a paradigm of human/sexual rights. I can do it no other way. How do you understand a Malawi government locking up two people who they see as same sex, for loving each other- for 14 years hard labour.. In fact the one person is a self identified M-F trans variant woman. How can you, as a free person, not march, write letters to the press, demanding outrage be expressed by our Government??
Throughout the night I receive notifications of human atrocities - I belong to a number of international and national organisations so the list servs are constantly busy. From the micro cosmic world of my therapy room to the world I am steeped in human horror- what do you say to a woman who describes her husband's "punishment" of her when she will "only have' sex with him twice a week - he wakes her in the middle of the night by licking her anus and then penetrates her anus, without her consensus , whilst she is asleep... I deliberately have my forehead botox in what is known as "tv" style- which allows me to raise my eyebrows and show my emotion through my facial expression.. you can understand why -- there are no words more powerful than the raising of my eyebrows in horror
Which brings me to my WC2010 PARTY. It is an activist event-- by attending this event you are standing up for your rights as a woman- your right to spend your money becoming sexually educated, your right to learn and purchase sex toys; your right to learn about condoms, negotiation skills, preparation for a WC2010 in which you feel you can be a part of the fun - safely!
