Out in Africa is the quite wonderful film festival that happens once a year, for the last 16 years, in Johannesburg and Cape Town, and now travels to out lying areas such as Bloemfontein. Nodi Murphy, director par excellence , has gathered an interesting and diverse number of great movies for your education and pleasure- oh yes, some very erotic scenes will get you squirming on your seat
. Take the time to hang out at this festival for the next 10 days - 10-20 September. As Pieter Dirk Uys said last night at the opening, the popcorn is great at Nu Metro theatres. I encourage people who are curious and questioning to see the movies, be in the company of LGBTI people who are sure to be around. I encourage people who are homophobic to get over it by viewing these movies that show you the humanness of being LGBTI.
For people who are keen to further understand the new sensational news about Caster Semenya , go see XXY. Banned last year's festival as "child porn" Nodi took this to court and won. The director, Lucia Puenzo and one of the main actors, Inez Efron are in the country to promote the movie. With an open mind go see this extraordinarily brave movie.
So Caster has been declared a "hermaphrodite" - sounds like a worm, right??! This is an old medical term for what today is called Intersex- this is a condition referred to when a person has ambiguous genitals. I am delighted that people working in gender organisations will get an opportunity to educate you, the public, about intersex within the greater context of gender. By chance this weekend we have our board meeting for Genderdynamix (www.genderdynamix.org.za) an NGO that works throughout Africa to ensure the rights of transgender people and educate the public and families of transgender people.
