There is something special about pure focus, utter self involvement for the purpose of achieving one's goals. Soccer goals fall into this category as well as tennis balls. Part of the privilege of being in South Africa at this time is to be exposed to the purity of this self focus necessary to score goals , yes, but necessary to achieve anything at all. This afternoon I watched 10 people ride 1 bicycle, 1 woman balance on her toe tip on 1 man's shoulder. Feats of utter self focus and concentration..

I describe the Cirque de Soleil, superb performance on  in town. For the last few weeks I have had my own private circus, balancing on what has felt like 1 toe on the shoulders of my world. My friend Carien tells me that research has shown that in academic presentations it takes 10 hours to prepare 10 words. I have prepared many words and it has taken me many hours. Focus, self denial -:), isolation and concentration have allowed me to produce the many presentations required of me over the next few weeks. Why does one do this? Like all choices we make there is a pay off- mine include satisfaction of new knowledge, a passion to educate health care providers  and of course adding tremendous gravitas to my clinical skills.

Plus , and I say this with humility, it feels quite wonderful to be recognised by one's colleagues, both nationally and internationally, for being updated, a relevant contributor to the scientific community and mostly for  making a difference to people's lives. Just this evening I received an invitation to present at a round table discussion taking place in Seoul, Korea, at the International Society of Sexual Medicine.

So I am coming out of this miasma, this fog into which I  have immersed myself , coming up for air to watch soccer, indeed the beautiful game, and get ready to get on a magic carpet ride for a quick trip to Istanbul, to feed my soul which craves sensuality, sensuality needs which are met in this exotic city. I return to deliver weeks of preparation around the country and of course the Artscape Woman's Festival.
