Porn and the Minister of Arts and Culture

Minister Lulu Xingwana's comments about the Innovative Women Exhibition which featured amongst others the internationally acclaimed work of Zanele Muholi and Nandipha Mntambo has provoked imperative  conversations amongst gender and LGBTI activists and common folk. I felt embarrassment at how these comments highlight that we have people in government positions who clearly are ill equipped to mange the responsibility or the understanding their brief requires of them - and mostly how  they are not coached to keep personal prejudice and ignorance at least undercover so as not to reveal so blatantly their own personal agendas.

Its kind of  confusing to be a citizen of this country - we have a president who practices concurrency , the very cause of the rapid spread of HIV/AIDS (more than one sexual partner at the same time, without using condoms) , who preaches a more "moral family values " approach as a solution to our countries ills. A president who is the custodian of our constitution including the Bill of Rights , yet makes openly homophobic/homoprejudicial comments. And appoints a publicly homophobic man as the Ambassador to Uganda, a country that is about to decide on the criminilazation of LGBTI people.

Now this - Minister of Arts and Culture violating the free speech, free expression part of our constitution by labelling art as "pornographic". What is wrong, by the way , with porn??? Watch out for debate on porn I have been invited to join on e TV with Judge Dennis Davis next week.

I walked out of the movie Avatar. I had a few hours free after my conference in Tampa Florida and in mid afternoon grabbed the chance to see this movie. The theatre was filled with moms and children. The children  clung to the Moms , hiding their faces and blocking their ears. The violence was extreme. And the love story a set up for disappointment in any modern day relationship- the same old gender  theme played out in a technological wonderland - the strong warrior rescues a whole nation as the empowered maiden looks on in awe of her man.  Please...

And the Minister walks out of an exhibition in which real people are loving real people with no violence, no agenda - just joy. I wonder what the Minister will say to the porn channel .

I welcome your views.

Hi Dr Eve. I agree in principle to what you had to say about the Honourable minister's reaction, and subsequent comments/excuses. I hate the fact that ministers are chosen for a portfolio based more on loyalty than on ability. I am not really a visual art lover, and I don't typically try to explore "what the artist was trying to say". Having said that, I believe there is a place for art, in all it's forms, and frankly, the minister's display of poor understanding annoys me. I cannot but wonder what is the next thing on her agenda.

This brings me to the next point.I was interested in your views on Avatar. I watched Avatar, and, as I was trained as a soldier under the old governmental system, the violence did not really trouble me personally. I certainly have not seen worse, but I was trained to an extent to deal with it if the need arose. That said, I would have certainly upped the age restrictions a helluva lot more on Avatar, than the censorship board did. That was, clearly an oversight on their part. What did concern me, however was that the storyline was nothing more than a new, very juiced-up and visually spectacular version of the Walt Disney classic:- "Pocahontas" To me the underlying story that jumped out at me wasn't about "the brave warrior defeating the enemy/saving the day and getting the girl"(It is such a cheesy line anyway), but more about how advanced civilisation seeks to steal land and resources "for the greater good" and how advanced civilisation beats the the primitive tribes into submission in the process. As far as I was concerned, it was a really good insight into how the West/Africa was won, and that to me was the real story behind Avatar, and I believe that the producer was taking a swipe at so-called civilised Western nations over Iraq and Afghanistan and a host of other nations. I urge you, Dr Eve, if you cannot stomach the violence levels of Avatar, at least watch Pocahontas again, and then re-think what the underlying theme of the movie was.
Regards
Hylton.
