Five years ago to the day- 9th May - Pres Jacob Zuma was found not guilty of rape. I received a few letters from activist organisations "faking" an apology for the President and resigning from his job, in an admission of shame. So today when a notice arrived announcing yet another corrective rape, for a moment I hoped it was another gimmick, a sick gimmicky way of drawing our attention to a crime of hate. But it was not a hoax. Nqobile Khumalo from Kwamashu township in Durban went missing on Tuesday 03 May 2011.

When her family could not trace her they started contacting her friend and her partner about her whereabouts

On the following day the family reported her missing and they searched for her in mortuaries and hospitals.

On Friday 08 May 2011 her ex boyfriend who had been persisting her to get back together with him was identified as

The last person to be seen following her on the 03rd of May.



After the suspect was interrogated by police he confessed on killing her and he showed the police where he had buried her.

He also confessed that he killed her because he could not accept that she was in love with another woman and chose her over him.

Nqobile was raped, severely beaten, and chocked to death. The body was covered in bruises and her eyes had popped out of the sockets

She had been killed on Tuesday and was buried in a shallow grave few meters away from her family home.

The suspect is in police custody and she will be buried in her parent’s home in Kwamashu Durban on Thursday 14th.

There is nothing further for me to add right now. Sleep on this tonight and let me knwo your thoughts on this new epidemic of hate, homoprejudice and violence emerging in our country which already has a reputaiton for the worst rates of sex crimes, femicide and HIV/AIDS incidence. I do not feel like a porud South African tonight.
