What is not fun is the fight the American people have to put up to have their basic rights protected. We know about the resistance to termination of pregnancy, the resistance to same sex marriage, and about policies that do not exist to provide people with many other basic rights. When I lectured this last week at Fairleigh Dickenson University the students were stunned at how liberal our policies are- and how atrocious our behaviour is. For example policies are well enforced to protect women from rape- yet, yes, you know this, we have the highest rape rate in the world. Why, they ask? Why, we all ask?
They wonder how our President gets away with some mud slinging from the press after an affair- yet most recently an American Senator admitted to placing his photo , a photo of himself with his shirt off- that's it- on Craigslist- and he resigned in shame . the disparity is enormous- are we too permissive sexually??
More on "sex addiction" with Redi and I on Friday morning .. women who have "love and sex addiction". I continue to get feedback from my colleagues who are clinicians. I even had this discussion with friends who run the largest sex offender program in New York at Columbia University- so be sure to listen to this captivating yet confusing discussion.
Parties -- by this I mean the unexpected. Oh yes real partys are fun as I get to meet most interesting people. But walking along Madison Avenue this weekend, we were suddenly confronted by a tv shoot- "Gossip Girl". Hordes of people hanging around to be part of this crazy celebrity world. Most every funky clothing store I walk into only want to show me Lady Gaga clothes - she has created a cult following. I guess no different to the Beatles with their beatnik haircuts ...
I begin the week in anticipation of attending sessions of the Commission on the Status of Women being run by the UN - and meals at both the Harvard club as well as the Yale club. It might stop me from going gaga with more shopping - New York does its trick on me: I am consumed by wanting things, mainly books , shoes and other juicy items.
I miss South Africa, I miss feeling part of my country. And I miss saying to anybody :Keep it covered, as no one here seems to care about condoms.
