How good is being a good parent? How protective should we be? I was surprised at the lack of inclusion overall that exists- and I judge them not- I got a small peephole into their world which is not representative of the world. But it makes me wonder how far will we go to "protect" our children from perceived and real harm? Is keeping them ignorant of the world a good idea? Their questions are the same as questions all parents at that age and stage raise: when do I start birds and bees talk; how do I get my daughter (actually never heard anyone mention sons) to stop masturbating, playing doctor-doctor games; wanting to marry her dad, touch my breasts.
What concerned me was the separation of sexuality from the world at large - it is such a shame that this schism exists, that parents not taught how to integrate values consistently across the board. For example we ensure our children have good table manners, not pick their noses in public but will not discuss masturbation manners. I was saddened at how few parents were aware of the upcoming 16 days of activism, the scary statistics on sexual violence and general cut off from how politics impact on our sexuality. Oh dear, where to from here? Such well intentioned people are parents. I have to remind myself that these same age/stage parents fill my therapy room as they have sexual and relationship challenges and dissatisfactions. How is it imaginable that they have the skills, knowledge and courage to deal with their children's sexuality. I salute those who came to learn.
