I sit in my rooms in the middle of Sea Point, a busy neighbourhood of Cape Town. In the stillness of my therapy rooms I hear the festive season freneticism outside rising. inside I wonder if anyone is actually at their desks, doing something called work. Perhaps it is my work passion that keeps me full steam ahead in work mode whilst all around me begin to play. I have to admit surrender, however, and soon will join the masses who sensibly leave their desks and go play.
I, like many South Africans and Brits, am mesmerized by the Dewani drama. There could be no better way of horrifically drawing attention at this time of 16 Days of Activism to the violence perpetrated against women. Anni Dewani died at this time and will be forever remembered, I am sure amongst many other reasons, for being a symbol of violence against women- and more specifically violence by an intimate partner, so it is alleged.
Look around you, at your own safety, at the safety of your children, and ensure your intimate relationships are bullet proof. Driving through Johannesburg last week , seeing the hugh walls and knowing the large amounts of money we invest in our need to feel secure, I so wish we would invest as diligently in our personal safety and security in our intimate relationships. Break down the walls when you feel locked in and thus make sure you make your own money to rebuild your own walls and those of your children.
See you tomorrow night!
