Dr. Eve Answers:
I would love more information on your particular situation so as to make an accurate diagnosis- thus treatment. Vaginismus is the involuntary contraction of the pelvic floor muscles and surrounding PC muscles. The manifestation is an inability to tolerate any form of penetration , be it a tampon, penis, toys. The pain is intolerable. Vaginismus can be primary in that the woman has unconsummated marriage, never had penetration with a penis. Then there is secondary vaginismus in which the woman used to be able to tolerate penetration and now has pain and the symptoms associated with vaginismus. The question for you is which do you have . Also we have to factor in your age: are you on hormone replacement therapy? Have you ever been other than the estrogen local pills your gynae gave you? This is vital as you have an atrophied vagina and as a result of this you are unable to tolerate penetration and so developed a secondary vaginismus.
Tell your gynae that you are thrilled you "look good/ok" but you need a much clearer idea of what is going on with your vaginal epithelium, vaginal muscles and your overall vulva health. And of course you need an assessment of your health profile in general. for example you may be diabetic which is causing you to have a dry vagina which then will contribute towards a vaginismus.
As you can hear you need a lot more information than you presently have. And then you need a psychosocial assessment by a therapist as your relationship, external stressors may be causing or contributing to this problem. Please go get it and then one will know what your treatment should be.
