My event is tomorrow. I go into it with so much vitality and spirit of Woman's Day due to the incredible time I have spent at Artscape , involved in their Woman's Art Week. I salute my new-best-friend Marlene Le Roux, director of Artscape Audience Development and Education- an inspiration, a real woman with heart, with courage and beauty- what else does a woman need for survival in this world?? Sex toys ... come and get them tomorrow
I sobbed during the performance of "BeautyFull" - wheelchair dancers dancing with non disabled dancers. the dignity, grace and life-affirming performance. I was absorbed in the Men's Forum , listening to the men panellists share their hearts and commitment to being dad's, lovers.educators, recognising the plight of women. My heart was shredded (strange how hearts seem to repair only long enough to be shredded again
) watching the performance put on by UCT drama department. I urge you to diarize this week for next year - you don't want to miss out on the emotions performance can bring to you.
I urge you to enter into forums, performances, discussions that are happening all over the country this month. Feel the pain and pleasure of women... only by being present with the reality of women through stories, personal narratives, women sharing, will you be able to appreciate the pain and pleasure of women. Arrange your own Woman's Day event .. read The Vagina Monologues... set up a sex toy party..
Earlier this evening I went to see "Dancing with Alfonso". Go see it, take all your friends, your children, your health care providers.. its a documentary about a man , Alfonso, who loves flamenco dancing, who is over 70 years old, who opens his heart to the camera and shares his losses, his desires, his ageing.. Go just to hear the 70 something year old woman say, in response to the interviewer's question on whether she and her husband still have sex, that sex over 70 is "endless"! Oh the joy of truth, the discomfort of the audience who walk in with ageism and walk out with respect and knowledge. Go see it..
I look forward to meeting you tomorrow, to signing my books for you, to seeing you celebrate and revel in simply being woman.
