One of the many women's health matters that Dr. Carol Thomas feels very strongly about is the importance of vaccinating your young daughters , and sons, your grandchildren, against HPV. The Human papiloma virus (HPV) vaccine was introduced in about March 2008. Controversy remains around this exceptional medical break through- anything related to sexuality becomes controversial, have you noticed?? Truth is that HPV is potentially a deadly sexually transmitted disease. HPV leads to cervical cancer. This vaccination prevents the contraction of HPV thus reduces chances of young girls ever having cervical cancer. It reduces risk of any genital warts thus sparing your sons /grandsons contracting this terrible infectious virus.
At a recent conference Prof Lynette Denny from Dept Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town, stressed that unlike HIV, HPV can be transmitted through skin-to-skin contact. This means that children are at risk from the moment they start fooling around/petting heavily. proponents of this vaccination request this be the last of your children's childhood vaccinations - in other words get them before they become sexually active. And this is where the controversy arises- parents are terrified this will encourage their children to be sexually active.
I say get over yourselves - protect your children by offering them comprehensive sexuality education plus this vital vaccination. Research shows children who are sexually ignorant, ill informed and lack self esteem will engage sex earlier than their educated, self assured peers.
As older people I expect you to support this life saving initiative.
