DR. EVE ANSWERS:
There are two categories of early/premature ejaculation: life long or acquired. They speak for themselves: lifelong is what you describe your husband having as you say he has "always" had it. Acquired early ejaculation describes the man who used to be able to control but since being with a particular person (male or female), after an illness, certain medication or a trauma , he has suddenly acquired this problem. There is no clear definition of when a man has early ejaculation - the latest accepted sexual medicine definition states that a man has early ejaculation if he ejaculates between 2 seconds and just over a minute. And if it causes personal distress both to himself and his partner/s. Clearly your man would fall into this category.
The cause of early ejaculation is multi factoral. There may be a genetic component involved but there is or develops anxiety. These men seem to have extra sensitivity to vaginal penetration- they reach a "tipping point" and cannot return so they ejaculate.
Treatment includes a thorough medical examination, lab tests including very importantly tests for thyroid functioning and life style assessment. Once no major illness identified then patient can be treated first with sex therapy, probably focusing on relationship therapy, in combination with medications.
There really are good treatment options available for this bothersome problem. So talk to your doctor and get him to read some journals which will explain the latest treatments available and as importnantly get into couple therapy.
