I caught a piece of your conversation on  Redi’s show on Radio 702 .  A woman cancer survivor was mentioning problems she has experienced and it was suggested she use vaginal moisturizers. Please can you suggest some which are readily available, not for a cancer survivor, but for a mid-fifty woman in menopause.

Dr. Eve Replies:

I am going to give you general recommendations but precede it by stating clearly that each woman needs her own unique menopause management plan designed by her gynecologist in consultation with the woman and her partner, if there is a partner. I urge you not to buy products randomly and haphazardly but rather within a holistic management plan as described above.

Vaginal health is a  specialised area of health that focuses on rejuvenating and replenishing vaginas. It begins with hormones, both systemic and local estrogen vaginal replacement creams, suppositories or gels. If you are not a good candidate for hormones at all, or you personally choose not to go for hormone therapy, best to use a moisturizer such as Replens (http://www.dreve.co.za/shop/lubes-moisturizers-and-condoms/replens-long-lasting-vaginal-moisturizer-8s.html)

Replens moisturizers the  vagina, ensuring the inner lining of the vaginal walls receive moisture that will keep it moistened and plumps up the lining which has worn so thin from loss of estrogen. It can safely be used up to 3 times a week.

Then its time to bring in a lubricant. Silicone lube is superior for peri and menopausal women as it stays longer and does not evaporate as quickly as water based lubricant. Pjur is the one I mostly recommend (http://www.dreve.co.za/shop/lubes-moisturizers-and-condoms/pjur.html)

Naturally you must keep the vaginal muscles stretched and used . If you are not having frequent penetration a vaginal vibrator is an essential addition to ensuring your vaginal health. I learned at the recent cancer conference that there is evidence that a vibrating dildo/dilator is way healthier  than a non vibrating one as the vibrations create vaginal contractions which work the muscles well. Here are some choices for you:

Jimmy Jane Form 6 (http://www.dreve.co.za/shop/vibrators/g-zone/jimmy-jane-form-6-pink.html)

Liv ( http://www.dreve.co.za/shop/vibrators/vaginal/liv.html)

BGood (http://www.dreve.co.za/shop/vibrators/vaginal/bgood-pink.html)

Any Rabbit vibe is just fabulous as it provides you with clitoral stimulation simultaneously. Try medium sized Thumbelina (http://www.dreve.co.za/shop/vibrators/rabbit/thumbelina-violet-elastomer.html) or Rock your World (http://www.dreve.co.za/shop/vibrators/rock-your-world.html)

Of course having plenty of vaginal intercourse is useful and pleasurable helping to keep intimacy alive in your life and relationship.
