Hi Dr Eve, I had both my ovaries removed 3 years ago due to health complications, I'm 48 with absolutely no libido, causing a problem in my marriage, what can I use to increase libido.

Dr. Eve Answers:

The ovaries produce estrogen and even some testosterone which is vital to libido so it is understandable that you are without sexual desire. In essence you are in menopause thus you need to be treated as a menopausal woman. This means discussing hormone replacement with your gynecologist. Your gynecologist needs to assess whether or not you are a good candidate for hormone therapy. This means taking a really good medical, sexual and personal history of youself - and including  your partner in education and decision making. Your gnecologist will send you for sex hormone tests to measure the level of your androgens, main one being testosterone. Even if you are not a good candidate for estrogen therapy, you may well be a good candidate for testosterone.

There are no medically approved testosterone therapies for women - however doctors are creatively using testosterone designated for men, on women. In addition you need to give your vagina attention - even if you cannot take estrogen, your vagina needs local hormone therapy to prevent atrophy and thus pain.

I always include sex toys as a part of treatment- it is magical to have a vibrator stimulate your genitals- suddenly you remember how great it is to feel sexually alive again. Always use with lubricant such as Afrodite for Her (http://www.dreve.co.za/shop/lubes-moisturizers-and-condoms/afrodite-libido-gel-for-her.htmlA vibe I recommend for women who are menopausal is the Mystic Wand (http://www.dreve.co.za/shop/vibrators/clitoral/vibratex-mystic-wand.html)

do not be despondent - there really is a lot you can do to improve your quality of life and sexuality - no doubt your partner will be appreciative.
